THE BATTLE OF CAMPALDINO was fought in Casentino on Saturday 11 June 1289 between the Guelph army of Florence and the Ghibelline army of Arezzo. Dante arrived there on horseback with the squadron of Feditori who would lead the first assault.
He was 24 years old. At the end of the battle there was a big storm that dispersed the now defeated Ghibelline troops so Dante returned to Florence in the rain.
